In a decisive move to strengthen healthcare delivery and professional training in Edo State, Governor Monday Okpebholo has signed into law a bill establishing the Edo State College of Nursing, Health Sciences and Technology. As detailed in the official press release dated Monday, May 5, 2025, this new legislation marks a bold step toward expanding access to healthcare education and creating lasting opportunities for employment and community development.

The signing ceremony, which took place at the Government House in Benin City, underscores the Governor’s commitment to driving equitable development across the state. Governor Okpebholo emphasized that the institution, once operational, will not only address the shortage of skilled health professionals but also spur economic activities in Udomi and surrounding communities in Esan Central Local Government Area.

Describing the bill as a “dream come true” for the people of Udomi, the Governor commended the Edo State House of Assembly for its speedy consideration and passage of the law. He praised the legislative arm for its sustained collaboration with the executive, which he noted was essential for delivering on the promises of democracy and good governance.

“The harmonious relationship between both arms of government has enabled us to focus on what truly matters — the well-being and prosperity of Edo people,” Okpebholo stated. “This college will place Edo on the national map for health and education excellence, while providing direct and indirect jobs for our citizens.”

The Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbebaku, who led lawmakers to witness the assent, echoed the Governor’s optimism. He highlighted the bill’s strategic importance to human capital development and its potential to elevate the state’s profile within the national healthcare framework. He noted that the Assembly was proud to support initiatives that advance the Governor’s development blueprint.

With the enactment of the Edo State College of Nursing, Health Sciences and Technology Law, 2025, the state government is expected to move swiftly into the implementation phase — from infrastructural development to curriculum planning and faculty recruitment. For Edo residents and prospective health students, this marks the beginning of a brighter and more empowered future in the sector.

As the state prepares to lay the groundwork for the new institution, expectations are high that it will serve as a model of academic excellence and a hub for healthcare innovation in Nigeria.
