"Delta Is Better Than Bauchi": PWDs from Bauchi living in Warri hail Gov. Oborevwori, seek government aid
Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) from Bauchi State now residing in Warri, Delta State, have praised the Delta State Government under Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, describing the state as better and more accommodating than their home state.
The commendation was made on Thursday during a street interview by Pebnews team as part of an investigation into the living conditions of vulnerable groups in Warri and its environs.
Speaking through an interpreter, the leader of the Hausa PWDs in Warri’s Hausa Quarters, Adamu Isah of Ningi LGA, Bauchi State, said harsh economic conditions and lack of support in Bauchi forced them to migrate to Delta in search of livelihood.
According to the group, surviving the rainy season has become increasingly difficult.
"This is the rainy season and it is very hard for us to survive now. Even feeding is a problem. One of us is seriously sick at the moment," said Muhammad Ndakuta, who interpreted for the group.
Isah noted that many of them live in overcrowded and poor housing conditions due to high cost of rent.
"Because of lack of money, four to five people share one room. Some of us even sleep in the market square because we don’t have anywhere to stay," he said.
Despite the hardship, the group expressed gratitude to Deltans for their kindness. "Sometimes people bring us food and money. Deltans have been very kind to us," Isah added.
The PWDs appealed to Governor Oborevwori to extend government support to them, saying they are now part of Delta and contribute to the state.
"We have lived here for 10 to 20 years. We have our voter’s cards and we vote during elections. We are pleading with the government to also come to our aid, just as it assists Deltans," Ndakuta conveyed on behalf of the group.
They urged relevant authorities and the state government to provide assistance in housing, healthcare, and welfare to ease their suffering, especially during the rainy season.
