A once shy undergraduate who could barely stand before a crowd has today become a commanding voice of discipline and leadership.

Akahara Joel Maduka, a Mechanical Engineering graduate of the Nigeria Maritime University Okerenkoko, 003RC, Class of 2024 (2019 intake), has emerged as a symbol of transformation proof that leadership is not always inborn, but built.

Joel, who once described himself as reserved and timid, said the structured and regimented environment of the university reshaped his confidence and outlook on life. During his time in school, he rose to serve as Drum Major, leading ceremonial parades and official functions in one of Nigeria’s most disciplined maritime institutions.

Today, he is a Mechanical Design Professional, currently serving in Ogun State, with roots in Imo State. Beyond his professional career, Joel is making waves in national service as the General Parade Commander at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Wannune, Tarka, Benue State a position that demands precision, authority, and unwavering discipline.

Reflecting on his journey, he credits his growth to the leadership exposure and mentorship he received, especially from Navy Commodore K. E. Itoko (rtd), whom he holds in high esteem.

“I used to be very shy,” Joel revealed. “But the school gave me responsibilities. It pushed me beyond my comfort zone. After five years, I can now stand confidently before any crowd and lead.”

He insists that regimentation in the university was never a distraction but a defining advantage.

“Give your best to your academics that is your primary purpose,” he advised current students. “Regimentation builds discipline. It makes you stronger and better prepared for life. Strive for mastery.”

Joel’s story is not just about personal success it is about transformation through discipline, mentorship, and purpose. From the parade ground of Nigeria Maritime University to commanding formations at NYSC camp, his journey sends a clear message: leadership is cultivated, not accidental.
