BREAKING: Protest erupts at EFCC headquarters as El-Rufai honours invitation
Supporters and critics of former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, gathered on Monday at the headquarters of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Abuja as he arrived at the anti-graft agency’s office.
The demonstrators, who assembled outside the commission’s Jabi premises, were split in their demands. While some staged a show of solidarity with El-Rufai, others urged the EFCC to carry out what they described as a thorough investigation.
Eyewitnesses said the protest heightened tension around the facility, though the situation remained largely peaceful and under control.
There was mild drama at the entrance of the commission when security operatives reportedly prevented some members of El-Rufai’s entourage from gaining access into the premises.
El-Rufai was said to have honoured an invitation extended to him by the EFCC, days after his legal team confirmed that he would make himself available to investigators.
The development followed an earlier failed attempt to arrest him at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on Thursday.
After arriving at the commission’s headquarters, the former governor proceeded into the EFCC facility, while the protesters continued their demonstration outside the gate.
