NMU Matriculates 1,058 Students, Warns Against Indiscipline
The Nigeria Maritime University (NMU), Okerenkoko, on Saturday matriculated 1,058 students in a colourful ceremony marked by a parade display and a renewed commitment to discipline and institutional growth.
Held at the Ceremonial Pavilion, Kurutie Campus, the event opened with a coordinated parade by cadets, who marched energetically before dignitaries and guests. The parade featured a formal salute to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Flora Tobolayefa Oluwafemi, and the Registrar, Dr. Paul Bebenimibo. Prof. Tobolayefa inspected the cadets, who demonstrated precision and discipline, drawing applause from attendees.
In her matriculation address, Prof. Oluwafemi announced the establishment of the Faculty of Science, increasing the university’s faculties to four: Engineering, Environmental Management, Transport, and Science. She described the addition as a major milestone and disclosed plans to expand infrastructure and academic programmes to position NMU for greater global recognition.

The new Vice-Chancellor, Tobolayefa issued a stern warning to the new students, urging them to shun unruly behaviour that could tarnish the institution’s reputation. She emphasized discipline and hierarchy within the maritime training structure, stressing that junior cadets must accord proper respect to their seniors.
In an interview, Prof. Tobolayefa said: “I hope to take Nigeria Maritime University to the next level. I have already achieved landmark events since I came on board eight months ago. I have brought the Faculty of Science, with five programmes, and an Advanced (A) Level programme. Just days ago, the National Universities Commission approved for verification postgraduate programmes in Mechanical Engineering, Transport, Nautical Science, Safety, and others. I trust that during my five-year tenure, NMU will reach new heights.”
She added, “This university is unique, located in the riverine and I have appealed to the Executive Secretary of Tertiary Education for special consideration to provide boats for ferrying students between campuses and Warri. I have also made this known to NIMASA three weeks ago.”
Meanwhile, a matriculant, Daniel Chukwuemeka from Imo State said, “When I saw the school online, it showed discipline. It’s so regimented, that’s why I chose to be here. My fellow matriculants, please work hard and study hard so we can graduate with flying colours.”
The ceremony formally inducted the new students into the academic community, marking the start of their journey in maritime education and leadership training.
