19 year old Nigerian waste seller, Samuel Adeniyi, receives ₦8m and university scholarship after story goes viral
In a heartwarming display of compassion and community generosity, the life of 19 year old Samuel Adeniyi has been transformed after his story gained widespread attention online.
Samuel had been collecting and selling plastic waste and cartons, earning small amounts typically between ₦1,000 and ₦2,000 per sack while trying to save enough money to buy basic tiling tools. He learned the tiling trade at age 17 but lacked essential equipment such as a cutting machine, mallet, and knife needed to begin working professionally.
His story drew public attention when content creator BayuzTV (Adebayo) shared a video showing Samuel’s daily struggles and humble demeanor. Moved by his determination and gratitude, BayuzTV stepped in with immediate support, providing him with a fresh haircut, new clothes, a meal, a tiling cutting machine, a new phone, and ₦50,000 in cash. The creator also visited Samuel’s mother and learned more about the family’s challenges, including the absence of Samuel’s father and the mother’s past efforts to provide for the household, including attempts to restart a failed palm oil business.
The video sparked an outpouring of support from Nigerians across social media and beyond. Donations poured in, totaling over ₦8 million in cash gifts and contributions, although reports vary slightly, with some citing ₦7.05 million in public donations alongside additional support. An extra ₦1 million was specifically set aside for Samuel’s mother to help revive her palm oil business. The family also received foodstuffs valued between ₦650,000 and ₦700,000. In addition, Samuel was awarded a full educational scholarship covering his education from secondary school through university level, securing his future beyond manual labour.
Samuel and his mother were overwhelmed with joy, reportedly rolling on the floor in excitement, shedding tears of gratitude, and praising God and the donors. His mother shared that she had prayed fervently in December for divine help, describing the wave of kindness as an answer to her prayers.
The story, which originated in Osun State with mentions of Osun Mall in Osogbo, stands as a powerful example of viral kindness and collective goodwill in Nigeria. Many have praised BayuzTV for bringing attention to Samuel’s hard work and humility, which ultimately inspired the massive show of support.
