Bayelsa Deputy Governor, Sen. Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, Dies at 60

Bayelsa State was thrown into mourning on Tuesday following the sudden death of the Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, who reportedly collapsed in his office shortly after noon.

According to Government House sources, Ewhrudjakpo was attending to official duties when he slumped without prior signs of illness. He was immediately rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Yenagoa, where medical personnel battled unsuccessfully to revive him. Doctors eventually confirmed him dead.

The incident has left the state in deep shock, with security operatives seen tightening access around the Government House and the medical facility.

The news of his passing was also confirmed by Lere Olayinka, media aide to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, who made a brief post acknowledging the development.

Senator Ewhrudjakpo, aged 60, had served as Bayelsa’s Deputy Governor since February 2020. Before then, he represented Bayelsa West Senatorial District in the National Assembly, where he was known for his legislative activism and strong political presence in the state’s leadership structure.

As of the time of filing this report, the Bayelsa State Government has yet to release an official statement, and further details surrounding the deputy governor’s sudden collapse remain unclear.
