The Delta State Government has awarded a contract worth over ₦35 billion to China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) for the reconstruction of a critical section of the Warri–Sapele–Benin Road.

Advertised by the Delta State Tenders Board, the project covers the stretch from the Spare Parts Market U-Turn, Effurun in Uvwie Local Government Area, to near Ohore Junction before Omenta Bridge in Uvwie and Okpe Local Government Areas. The reconstruction is scheduled for completion within 12 months.

According to the contract terms, CCECC will reconstruct a total of 10 kilometers of the dual carriageway five kilometers on each carriageway featuring an expanded width of 11.6 metres, 2.8-metre shoulders, stormwater drainage, reinforced concrete pavement, and a durable wearing course.

The intervention aligns with Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s M.O.R.E Agenda, which emphasizes infrastructure renewal and sustainable urban development.

Upon completion, the road—one of Delta’s busiest corridors linking the state to other parts of the South-South and Niger Delta—is expected to ease traffic congestion, improve connectivity, and stimulate socio-economic activities across communities and businesses that rely on the route.

For years, the Effurun–Sapele–Benin expressway, though a federal Trunk A road, has suffered severe deterioration, leading to recurring gridlocks, accidents, worsening insecurity, and economic hardship for motorists and commuters.

Speaking on the project, the Commissioner for Works and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, said the state’s intervention demonstrates the Oborevwori administration’s determination to provide timely relief to motorists and sustain Delta’s reputation as a commercial hub in the South-South.

He added that by engaging CCECC, the government was assuring residents of quality, durability, and value for money.

Aniagwu further noted that the project comes on the heels of the completed Asaba–Kwale–Isoko–Ughelli highway, stressing that Governor Oborevwori remains committed to delivering critical infrastructure beyond state-owned roads to ensure safer, faster, and more reliable access to markets, industries, and neighbouring states.
