2026 tax reforms in focus as Tinubu launches income calculator

President Bola Tinubu on Friday announced the launch of a Personal Income Tax calculator designed to help Nigerians understand the implications of the new tax reforms set to take effect from January 2026.
The move, shared through a post on the president’s official X account, appears aimed at increasing transparency and public awareness around the changes introduced by the recently signed tax laws.
The calculator allows individuals to estimate how much tax they would owe under the reformed system and compare it with current rates. The tool, available on the government's fiscal policy platform, is intended to demonstrate how the reforms affect different income levels and to reassure the public that the new tax structure will protect low-income earners.
Tinubu described the tax overhaul as a step toward a more equitable system that promotes fairness and economic inclusion. He emphasized that the reforms are specifically designed to avoid penalising poverty or placing additional financial pressure on the country’s most vulnerable citizens. According to him, “A fair tax system must never punish poverty or weigh down the most vulnerable. With the new tax laws I recently signed, taking effect from January 2026, we have lifted this burden and created a path of equity, fairness, and true redistribution in our economy.”
The online tool is being promoted as a way to highlight the progressive nature of the new tax policy, which is structured to ensure that those who earn more contribute more, while those with lower earnings bear a reduced burden. The president noted that the calculator is also meant to simplify compliance and improve understanding of the tax system for individuals and businesses alike. He stated that the reforms “safeguard low-income earners, strengthen progressivity, and simplify compliance, ultimately delivering a transparent system for all.”
Encouraging citizens to explore the tool and engage with the reform process, Tinubu concluded his message with a call for collective optimism and trust in the direction of the country's economic policies. “Together, we are renewing hope in the Nigeria of our dreams. Take a bet on our country. Bet on Nigeria to work for you, your family, and your community.”
