Breaking: Late President Muhammadu Buhari Laid to Rest in Daura

President Tinubu, VP Shettima, Top Officials Attend Burial in Hometown
The remains of former President Muhammadu Buhari were laid to rest on Tuesday in his hometown of Daura, in accordance with Islamic funeral rites, amid a solemn gathering of Nigeria’s top political and military leadership.
The funeral ceremony was attended by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, and several high-ranking government officials, who arrived in Daura to pay their final respects to the late statesman.
Buhari, who passed away on Sunday afternoon in London following a prolonged illness, was buried at his family compound following Janazah prayers, led by respected Islamic scholars and clerics from across the North.
Crowds of mourners, including political associates, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and ordinary citizens, gathered to witness the burial of a man who ruled Nigeria both as military head of state (1984–1985) and democratically elected president (2015–2023).
The federal government had earlier ordered national flags to fly at half-staff, with tributes continuing to pour in from across the country and international community, celebrating Buhari's legacy in public service, anti-corruption efforts, and national security.
Vice President Shettima, who led the Nigerian delegation to London to accompany the body home, also described the late president as “a man of uncommon restraint and principle.”
Security was tight in and around Daura as dignitaries and thousands of sympathizers paid their respects. The burial was conducted with full honours and traditional Islamic rites, without the usual pomp, in line with Buhari’s well-known modesty.
