The Chief Imam of Uromi, Moritada Obhakhoboh, who was kidnapped earlier this month, has regained his freedom following a sustained rescue effort by the Edo State Police Command.

The Command confirmed the development in a statement released on Tuesday, crediting the success to unrelenting pressure mounted by its operatives in collaboration with local security teams.

Obhakhoboh was freed on saturday, July 13, exactly six days after his abduction in the Angle 80 area of Uromi, a disturbing incident that sparked concern across the local community.

“The kidnapping occurred on 7th July 2025 at the Angle 80 area of Uromi and was reported to the Uromi Divisional Police Headquarters on 8th July 2025,” the Command’s spokesperson, Moses Yamu, said in the statement.

Yamu added that police acted swiftly after receiving the report, deploying tactical units and teaming up with local vigilantes to hunt down the kidnappers and rescue the cleric unharmed.

“Upon receipt of the report, the Command immediately launched a robust manhunt for the perpetrators, deploying tactical teams and collaborating with local vigilantes to track down the assailants with a view to rescuing the victim unhurt and bringing the culprits to justice,” he said.

Edo State Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, applauded the efforts of the officers involved in the operation, praising their professionalism and commitment.

He also reiterated the Command’s determination to keep residents safe and bring criminal elements to book.

“We remain resolute in our commitment to protect lives and property. Let this serve as a warning to those who think they can terrorize our communities,” CP Agbonika stated.

The Commissioner further urged members of the public to remain vigilant and continue supporting law enforcement efforts by sharing credible information, noting that community cooperation remains a key pillar in the fight against crime.
