Vice President Kashim Shettima on Monday paid a condolence visit to Mrs. Aisha Buhari, widow of the late President Muhammadu Buhari, at their London residence, following the former leader’s death on Sunday at approximately 4:30 p.m. in the United Kingdom.
Acting on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive, Vice President Shettima traveled to London earlier on Monday morning, accompanied by the President’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila.
He was received at the airport by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, and Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum.
President Tinubu, in announcing Buhari’s passing, ordered flags to be flown at half-staff nationwide in honour of the former leader, who served as Nigeria’s President from 2015 to 2023, and previously as Military Head of State from 1984 to 1985.
As part of the official funeral protocol, Vice President Shettima and Chief of Staff Gbajabiamila have been tasked with accompanying the late President’s remains back to Nigeria for burial.
According to family sources and Islamic customs, Buhari will be laid to rest in Daura, Katsina State, on Tuesday.
Across Nigeria and the international community, tributes have continued to pour in, acknowledging Buhari’s role in shaping the country’s political and military history.
More details on national funeral arrangements are expected to be released by the Presidency.
