Flags to Fly at Half-Staff Nationwide in Honour of Former President

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally announced the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died in London at approximately 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 13, 2025, following a prolonged illness.

In an official statement signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, President Tinubu expressed his deep condolences to the Buhari family and the nation.

President Tinubu has spoken with Mrs. Aisha Buhari, the widow of the former President, and extended his heartfelt sympathies,” the statement read.

President Tinubu has directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to travel to the United Kingdom immediately to accompany the late President’s remains back to Nigeria, signaling the start of formal funeral protocols.

In honor of the departed leader, the President has also ordered that all flags across the country be flown at half-staff, underscoring the national significance of the loss.

Muhammadu Buhari, 82, held the unique distinction of leading Nigeria both as a military Head of State (1984–1985) and later as a democratically elected President (2015–2023). His presidency was defined by a tough stance on corruption, economic restructuring policies, and efforts to combat insurgency and insecurity, although it was also marked by criticisms related to human rights and economic challenges.

His passing marks the end of a significant chapter in Nigeria’s political history.

Further details regarding funeral arrangements, national mourning schedules, and official tributes are expected in the coming days.

As the country reflects on the legacy of its former leader, tributes continue to pour in from across the political spectrum, African leaders, and international partners.
