Taskforce says safety takes precedence as infrastructure upgrade begins

In a proactive move to safeguard lives and support ongoing power infrastructure upgrades, the Delta State Taskforce on Environment has evacuated traders and dismantled makeshift stalls at the PTI/Osubi Junction in Uvwie Local Government Area.

The clearance operation, which took place under the directive of the Taskforce Chairman, Chief Godspower Omafuvwe Asiuwhu JP, coincides with the installation of a massive 330KVA high-tension power line expected to enhance electricity distribution across Delta State and beyond.

Chief Asiuwhu described the evacuation as a “critical safety intervention”, emphasizing the state government’s commitment to ensuring that development does not come at the expense of human lives.

"The duty of any responsible government is to protect lives and property. Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s administration is focused on building a safer, smarter Delta, where infrastructure growth aligns with public safety,” he said.

He warned that trading under or near high-tension lines poses grave risk, including exposure to harmful electromagnetic radiation and the danger of electrocution. He urged market leaders and traders to relocate to designated safe zones, adding, “Structures under power lines are ticking time bombs. Prevention is always better than cure.”

Taskforce Coordinator, Comrade Frank Orogun, confirmed that the relocation exercise was orderly and successful, with security operatives deployed to ensure safety and manage traffic around the busy junction.

"We achieved 100% compliance. All affected traders were moved to safer locations, and we appreciate their cooperation,” he noted.

Chief Asiuwhu also praised Governor Oborevwori for his infrastructure drive, particularly his partnership with the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and Julius Berger Nigeria Plc in the ongoing construction of flyovers, cloverleaf interchanges, and major road expansions across Warri and Effurun.

"These are not just roads and bridges—they’re game changers. The urban renewal projects will redefine the landscape of Delta State and attract economic growth,” he said.

The Taskforce reiterated that May 25, 2025, will stand as a milestone date not just for Delta’s power sector boost, but for a renewed commitment to public safety and sustainable urban development.
