In a stunning breakthrough, the Delta State Police Command has successfully rescued a five-month-old baby who was abducted two months ago after his mother was allegedly drugged during a trip from Koko to Warri.
The suspect, identified as Mrs. Joy Temitope Oyetimi, 49, is now in police custody following her arrest by operatives of the Ekpan Divisional Police Headquarters after an intensive manhunt.
Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwond , made the announcement on Thursday during a press briefing in Asaba, describing the incident as “deeply disturbing but ultimately hopeful.
The incident dates back to February 16, 2025, when the 20-year-old mother, whose name has been withheld for privacy, embarked on a business trip in the company of the suspect. According to police findings, during the journey, Mrs. Oyetimi offered the young woman a drink laced with a sedative.
“She fell asleep, unaware of the danger she was in,” CP Abaniwonda stated. “When she regained consciousness, her two-month-old baby had vanished.”
The disappearance sparked a statewide investigation led by the Ekpan DPO, relying heavily on intelligence gathering and community support.
Weeks of painstaking efforts paid off when officers apprehended Mrs. Oyetimi. During interrogation, she reportedly confessed to abducting the baby, who is now five months old.
The child was recovered unharmed and has since been reunited with his emotional but relieved parents.
“The rescue of this child is a powerful reminder of what we can achieve through community policing and swift, intelligent response,” said the Commissioner.
While the suspect remains in custody, CP Abaniwonda confirmed that investigations are ongoing to determine whether there are accomplices or if the case is linked to a broader child trafficking syndicate.
“This incident is a chilling reminder of how easily trust can be exploited,” he noted. “We are committed to ensuring the protection of vulnerable citizens, particularly women and children.”
The news has sent waves of emotion throughout Delta State, with many residents expressing both shock and gratitude over the police’s success.
“No parent should suffer the trauma of losing a child this way,” said a community leader in Warri. “We thank the Delta State Police for acting swiftly and compassionately.”
The police have called on members of the public to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity immediately, stressing the importance of communal responsibility in combating crime.
