Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has commended workers for their unwavering contributions to the state's development, describing them as the “backbone of the government's wheel of progress.”

Speaking during the 2025 Workers’ Day (May Day) celebration held in Asaba, Governor Oborevwori—represented by his Deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme—urged workers to remain resilient in the face of economic hardship, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to improving their welfare.

"Workers’ Day is not just a celebration," the governor stated. "It is a moment to reflect on our shared journey and renew our commitment to building a Delta State and Nigeria where every worker is valued, empowered, and rewarded."

He lauded the theme of this year’s celebration, "Reclaiming the Civic Space in the Midst of Economic Hardship,” as timely and powerful, calling it a rallying point for collective action.

"Even in the face of adversity," Oborevwori said, "we must reclaim our rights, amplify our voices, and engage fully in the civic processes that govern our lives."

Reaffirming his administration’s worker-centric focus under the M.O.R.E. Agenda, the governor highlighted key achievements including prompt salary and pension payments, clearance of backlogs, skills training programmes, workplace upgrades, and revitalization of healthcare and educational facilities.

"Since assuming office, we have placed workers at the heart of our agenda. We are not only creating jobs through entrepreneurship initiatives but also investing heavily in infrastructure and agriculture to reduce costs and enhance food security."

The governor also unveiled a whistleblower policy with a dedicated phone line, a measure aimed at deepening transparency and protecting workers who expose corruption.

“This is governance that works for you,” he declared, “rooted in fairness and accountability.”

He concluded with a call for unity and dialogue, pledging ongoing collaboration with labour unions: “Let us march on, stronger together, toward a brighter and more prosperous future.”

Earlier, Delta State NLC Chairman, Comrade Goodluck Ofobruku, and TUC Chairman, Comrade Martins Bolum, jointly addressed workers, urging them to stand united and reclaim their civic space despite prevailing economic challenges.

They acknowledged that the current economic climate has tested the resilience and resolve of Nigerian workers but emphasized the importance of solidarity in driving societal progress.

The celebration was capped with a vibrant match pass parade by various trade unions, showcasing the strength and diversity of the state's labour force.
