AKA “No Justice, No Peace” today reacted over the defection of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori from the People's Democratic Party, PDP to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.
ISRCA National Coordinator, Comrade(Amb.) Derrick Oritsematosan Agberen in a statement made available to Our Correspondent said the governor's defection from the PDP to the APC calls for serious concerns by citizens and non-citizens of the State.
The group said this is so considering that Governor Oborevwori, is nearly just two years into his term and has yet to complete his first tenure in office stressing that," this is not an election year."
According to the group,"As to what prompted the decision of the Delta State Governor, almost all the elected officials and appointees remain unknown despite uncertified narratives about the reasons behind the motive for his defection.
"Is the defection of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori driven by political interests, a personal pursuit of his political ambition, fear of the outcome of the 2027 gubernatorial elections, or is the People’s Democratic Party’s ideology thin, weak, or lack of his trust in the hierarchy of the party?
"In advanced democracies, cross-carpeting is driven by principle rather than self-serving and political interests. What we are witnessing today is political opportunism or political prostitution which lacks political morality.
"Party switching has become a pervasive phenomenon in Nigeria, yielding absurd consequences wherein the attitudes of politicians remain unchanged, altering only the party’s name. In the Nigerian system of governance, defection has fostered animosity among party members, resulting in the politicization of every issue pertinent to the welfare of the populace.
"As we await the Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori to address Deltans on the reasons for his defection to the All Progressive Congress (APC) and its potential benefits to the general populace, the decisions should be people-centric, ensuring a fair distribution of power to facilitate genuine governance for all, rather than serving as medium to punish or make personal gains or shortchange any wards or ethnic groups in the State.
"Notably, Delta State comprises a diverse multiethnic population, and each district should be accorded equal participation rights."
