Pope Francis, the 266th Pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church, has died at the age of 88. His death was announced by Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Apostolic Chamber, who confirmed that the Holy Father passed away at 7:35 a.m. on Thursday at the Casa Santa Marta in the Vatican.

Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Argentina, had been battling respiratory complications for several months. He was hospitalized on February 14, 2025, at Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic Hospital with bronchitis, later diagnosed as bilateral pneumonia. Despite being discharged after 38 days and returning to his Vatican residence, his condition gradually deteriorated.

The Pope had a long history of respiratory issues, having undergone lung surgery in his early 20s and more recently cancelling international engagements due to recurring illnesses.

In April 2024, Pope Francis approved a revised edition of the papal funeral liturgy, requesting a simplified rite focused on Christian hope and resurrection. His funeral Mass, yet to be formally announced, will follow these updated guidelines.

Archbishop Diego Ravelli, Master of Apostolic Ceremonies, noted that the new funeral rite reflects Pope Francis’ desire to be remembered as a humble servant of Christ, not a figure of worldly power.

Pope Francis led the Catholic Church from 2013 until his death, championing social justice, compassion for the marginalized, and reform within the Church. His legacy is marked by his pastoral style and unwavering commitment to Gospel values.
