"Na Your Mama": Delta Government Rescinds Disciplinary Query against Nursing Student After Public Outcry

The Delta State Government has swiftly withdrawn a disciplinary query issued to Osato Edobor, a student at the School of Nursing Sciences, Agbor, following her involvement in a viral social media video during the recent visit of First Lady Oluremi Tinubu.
The decision, announced on Friday by the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joseph Onojaeme, comes amid widespread public reaction to the query, which many saw as an attempt to suppress student expression.
In an official statement via X (formerly Twitter), the Ministry of Health reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring a conducive learning environment for students and upholding their rights in health-related programs.
“The Honourable Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joseph Onojaeme, has directed the immediate withdrawal of the query issued to Nursing Student Osato Edobor by the Provost of the School of Nursing Sciences, Agbor.”
In a video statement, Dr. Onojaeme clarified the government’s position, emphasizing that the student was never meant to be victimized.
“On the trending letter of query issued to the student of the School of Nursing, Agbor, I’ve instructed the provost to withdraw the letter. We don’t want to victimize any of the students.”
Taking an extra step to reassure the public, the commissioner revealed that he had personally reached out to Osato Edobor to confirm the withdrawal of the disciplinary action.
“I’ve also reached out to the student in question, and the student has confirmed to me that the letter was withdrawn late yesterday night.”
Dr. Onojaeme further urged the public to disregard any misinformation regarding the issue, assuring that the state government remains committed to fairness and student welfare.
The swift withdrawal of the query has been met with mixed reactions, with some commending the government for taking corrective action, while others question why the query was issued in the first place.
This incident highlights the growing influence of social media in shaping public discourse and holding authorities accountable. It also underscores the need for clear policies in educational institutions regarding students’ engagement on social platforms.
With this resolution, the Delta State Government aims to move forward, reinforcing its stance on protecting students’ rights while maintaining discipline in academic institutions.
