Lagos Assembly: GAC Convenes Key Meeting on Obasa’s Fate

Once again, the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) of the Lagos All Progressives Congress (APC) is set to hold an emergency meeting today (Monday) to address the ongoing leadership crisis in the state House of Assembly.

The meeting is set to take place at Lagos House Marina, the official residence of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. The GAC, the highest decision-making body of the APC in Lagos, has authority over party members. It is chaired by Pa Tajudeen Olusi, with President Bola Tinubu serving as a lifetime patron.

The GAC held a similar meeting at the same venue about two weeks ago to discuss developments in the Lagos State House of Assembly.

Meanwhile, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is also expected to hold the weekly Monday Executive Council meeting simultaneously, where the ongoing legislative crisis will be a key agenda, with the aim of reaching a lasting and amicable resolution.

It will be recalled that former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa was removed in absentia on January 13, 2025, by 32 out of 40 members of the Assembly over allegations of financial misappropriation, misconduct, and high-handedness. He was replaced by his former deputy, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, as the substantive Speaker, sparking mixed reactions among GAC members, party loyalists, and the public.

Following Obasa’s removal, the crisis further deepened divisions within the GAC, with some members expressing disagreements over the process that led to his ouster.

Muraina Taiwo, a GAC member from Isolo Constituency, recently criticized the Assembly members for reconvening during recess to remove Obasa. Similarly, other GAC members, including Musiliu Obanikoro and Senator Anthony Adefuye, have expressed differing views on the embattled former Speaker.

While Adefuye said Obasa was illegally removed, Obanikoro countered the latter, saying his statement “was careless.”

However, GAC Secretary Mutiu Are described the Assembly crisis as a “family affair,” assuring that it would be resolved internally.

Reports over the weekend indicated that the GAC has initiated steps to amicably resolve the dispute following Obasa’s removal.
