Okowa responds to EFCC petition: challenges critics to refute claims

Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, the immediate past Governor of Delta State, has challenged critics and petitioners behind the ongoing investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to disprove his response to the allegations. 

He made the statement on Thursday when the leadership of the Delta State Traditional Rulers Council, led by the Chairman, Maj.-Gen. Felix Mujakperuo (retd.), the Orodje of Okpe, visited him in Asaba to express solidarity.

Okowa strongly dismissed the contents of the petition against him, describing them as malicious, politically motivated, and full of "mischievous lies." He specifically took issue with the claim that he had misappropriated N1.3 trillion, which he termed "ridiculous."

"It is simply unfathomable," Okowa remarked. "To allege that someone misappropriated N1.3 trillion implies that the person would have to divert between N16 billion to N20 billion every month for 96 months. That’s not only unreasonable; it’s absurd."

The former governor also criticized media reports, noting that while he was abroad for 30 days, false stories circulated about his detention for three days before any formal EFCC invitation. "This kind of propaganda was premeditated," Okowa stated. "It’s clear that the groundwork was laid for the misinformation that followed."

Despite these accusations, Okowa expressed confidence in the EFCC's investigative process. "I am not afraid of any investigation. I will not obstruct the EFCC from carrying out their duties," he said. "But the right communication must be conveyed to the public. Unfortunately, some individuals were able to manipulate parts of the media to spread falsehoods."

Okowa revealed that he had answered all of the EFCC's questions, confident that the commission would soon realize that the allegations were based on falsehoods. "I believe the EFCC will come to the conclusion that these are nothing but political attacks," he added.

The former governor also reflected on his administration’s legacy, emphasizing the remarkable progress made in Delta State. "Our achievements speak for themselves," he said. "We may not have made noise, but with the guidance of our elders and the collective support of the people, we accomplished a lot."

He highlighted key projects, including the state’s expansion in higher education. "Delta State is now home to four state-run universities, with over 30,000 students currently enrolled. These institutions are running simultaneously, and we are proud of the progress they’ve made."

Okowa also pointed to ongoing infrastructure projects, including flood mitigation efforts in Asaba and Warri. He commended Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for continuing the Warri Storm Water Drainage Project, which is now 80% complete. "We ensured that development reached even the riverine areas, improving roads and infrastructure," he said.

Regarding his tenure, Okowa expressed gratitude for the support of the traditional rulers, noting their role in maintaining peace and stability in the state. "I thank God for fathers like you," he said. "If we hadn’t done well, you would have been the first to speak out. Your prayers and support were instrumental in making Delta a peaceful state during my administration."

Earlier, the Chairman of the Delta State Traditional Rulers Council, Maj.-Gen. Felix Mujakperuo, expressed the council's unwavering support for Okowa. "We are aware of the challenges you are facing, but we want you to know that we stand with you," he said. "You have always been good to us, and we will continue to pray for you. Your integrity is unquestionable, and we know that you will be vindicated."

Mujakperuo assured Okowa that the council would continue to support him, and praised his cordial relationship with traditional rulers throughout his tenure. "Good men face trials, but we know that you are a man of integrity. We are confident that the truth will prevail."

The visit ended with a reaffirmation of solidarity, with the traditional rulers expressing their continued support for the former governor.
