Anxiety as ASUU meets today

Picture

Anxiety has enveloped university community as the national leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, is set to meet today in Abuja.

The union is expected to hold a state of the nation address during the meeting slated to take place this morning.

The development which is coming exactly one week after the union gave the federal government a fresh 14-day pre-strike notice, has put fears in the minds of students, as the outcome is uncertain.

The 14 days ultimatum was an extension of the 21-day notice the union previous issued
to the government on August 18 to meet its demands.

Recall that the nation's public university lecturers' union has long been demanding the review and signing of its renegotiated 2009 agreement with the federal government

Other demands are the revitalisation fund for public universities, the payment of outstanding earned academic allowances, and the release of withheld salaries.

ASUU has equally been demanding the remediation of promotion arrears and third-party deductions targeted at its members as well stoppage of illegal recruitment, proliferation of public universities, and the abuse of university laws among others.
