#Endbadgovenace protest: Court grants bail to 10 protesters
The Federal High Court has granted bail to the 10 protesters charged with treason and terrorism at the Federal High Court by the Nigeria Police Force.
In a congratulatory message by Chief Femi Falana SAN to other lawyers who handled the case, he said one the cases cited by his colleagues which was relied upon by the Presiding Judge, Justice Nwite is the case of Ahmed Ebute vs Federal Republic of Nigeria which involved six(6) Senators who included Ahmed Bola Tinubu that were charged by Sani Abacha Junta in 1994. According to him, in that case, the defendants were granted bail before the frivolous charge was discontinued and struck out.
According to him, since the right to protest against the Government does not constitute a treasonable offence under the Criminal Code, the treason charge was withdrawn from the High Court.
Part of the statement reads:"I am compelled to reiterate the call for the withdrawal of the treason charge from the Federal High Court. Otherwise, the Defence Counsel will turn the case into the trial of the neoliberal policies of the Bola Tinubu's administration, which caused the protests".
He therefore congratulated his colleagues: Abubakar Marshall and Deji Adeyanju who were able to argue the oral bail application. His words:" I congratulate my colleagues, Abubakar Marshall and Deji Adeyanju, who successfully argued the (oral) bail application".
