NLC, TUC undermines FG's plea to begin nationwide strike
Despite the Federal Government's plea, Nigeria Labour Congress has resolved to embark on the strike after a four-hour meeting with the leaders of the National Assembly and Trade Union on Sunday in Abuja.
The leaders of Labour said there is no going back on the nationwide industrial action which begins today Monday, June 3, 2024.
The President of the Trade Union, Festus Osifo said: "The strike must hold for now, we don’t have the power to call off the strike, tomorrow (today) morning, the strike will kick off as we take their plea asking us to call off the strike to our various organs".
The meeting between Federal Government and NLC was aimed at begging workers not to embark on the planned industrial action because of the new minimum wage of N60,000.
The National Assembly said the interest of the people should be a priority and the strike would cause severe hardship in the economy.
Osifo expressed disappointment over the Government’s inability to conclude and pass into law the new National Minimum Wage Act, and reverse the hike in electricity tariff to N65/kWh.
The Labour Unions said the current minimum wage of ₦30,000 can not cater for the well-being of an average worker just as he said not all Governors are able to pay the current wage. He added that the Act should be reviewed every five years to meet with economic demands of workers.
Meanwhile, the Aviation Union had indicated interest in joining the strike as it plans to withdraw all services at the airport.
