A day after Army’s exit: One person allegedly killed and three injured as scavengers loot Okuama-Ewu Community
Unidentified locals have allegedly killed scavengers and injured three others who entered Okuama-Ewu Community in Ughelli South Local Government Area, Delta State, to steal zinc, iron, rods and others.
This incident happened barely a day after the Nigerian Army left the community after negotiations between Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and the Army authorities. Reports had it that, soldiers started to leave the community on Monday, and on Wednesday, they finally left.
It was gathered that some youths who discovered that the army has left the community came to hustle for scraps to sell.
A villager who pleaded anonymity expressed disappointment at the action of the scavengers. His words: “As soldiers withdrew, boys from a nearby community invaded the place to remove irons, rods, and all that. Some indigenes of Okuama who sneaked there when they heard the army has vacated saw them removing zinc and rods as if what the community went through was not enough. Well, they chose to be calm.”
Meanwhile, a community leader, Innocent Ejedegba disclosed that soldiers had vacated the area saying that he was informed of the recent developments in the community.
It was gathered from reliable sources that there is serious tension in the area as neighbouring communities alleged that their indigenes were macheted, injured and hospitalised.
A source said that there are fears that there could be a reprisal attack if urgent steps are not taken by the relevant security agencies and the Delta State Government to address the situation.
