The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has confiscated suspected counterfeit cosmetics and other regulated products during an enforcement operation at Igbudu Market in Warri, Delta State.

The operation, which took place on Friday, followed intelligence reports indicating the circulation of counterfeit regulated products in the popular market.

The exercise was led by officers of NAFDAC’s Asaba Zonal Office, with support from the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigerian Army and the market union.

During the operation, the enforcement team visited identified shops and locations where suspected counterfeit products were discovered and evacuated.

Among the seized items were suspected counterfeit cosmetics bearing the brand names of Listerine and Nivea.

NAFDAC also warned members of the public against purchasing KY Jelly lubricant currently found in circulation, saying the product should be treated as suspicious.

According to the agency, the product’s Marketing Authorisation Holders confirmed that the last authorised supply was made more than five years ago.

It therefore advised consumers to exercise caution and avoid purchasing any such products currently being offered for sale in the market.

Meanwhile, NAFDAC has dismissed social media reports claiming that its officers were attacked or chased out of Igbudu Market during the enforcement operation.

The agency maintained that the exercise was successfully completed, with its officers gaining access to all identified locations and evacuating the offending products.

The operation underscores the agency’s continued efforts to rid markets of counterfeit and potentially harmful regulated products and protect consumers from the risks associated with their use.
