Delta CDHR commends Oshiomhole for highlighting deplorable federal roads, criticises Nwoko

The Delta State chapter of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) has commended former Edo State Governor and Senator, Adams Oshiomhole, for drawing attention to the deplorable condition of federal roads in Edo and Delta states, while criticising Senator Ned Nwoko over what it described as a failure to push for their rehabilitation.

In a statement signed by the Delta State Chairman of the CDHR, Comrade Derrick Oritsematosan Agberen, and the Publicity Secretary, Comrade Nosa Oveseey Godswill, the group praised Oshiomhole for calling for the urgent repair of existing federal roads before embarking on new projects.

Copies of the statement were sent to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the National Assembly, the Delta State Government, and the Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi.

The rights group described the condition of federal roads across Delta State as unbearable, stressing that road users continue to face severe hardship due to their poor state.

"This is exactly the kind of road Senator Adams Oshiomhole spoke about—roads that are in terrible condition and require urgent repair before new projects are initiated," the statement read.

While acknowledging calls for the Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, to intervene, the CDHR maintained that responsibility for the affected roads rests primarily with the Federal Government.

"While we agree that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori should intervene to ease the suffering of our people, the truth remains that these are federal roads. The primary responsibility lies with the Federal Government," the group stated.

The organisation also questioned the efforts of elected federal lawmakers representing the affected areas.

"Where are our representatives and Senator Ned Nwoko? It is disappointing that the member representing this constituency in the House of Representatives and Senator Ned Nwoko have not sufficiently mounted pressure on the Federal Government to fix these roads. Instead, energy is being channelled into the pursuit of Anioma State," the statement added.

The CDHR further expressed concern over what it described as the lack of major federal road projects approved for Delta and Edo states by the Minister of Works.

"This neglect cannot continue," the group said.

It called on the National Assembly, the Minister of Works, and the Federal Government to urgently award contracts and commence rehabilitation of the affected roads.

"The lives of Deltans and all road users matter," the statement concluded.
