Oborevwori Ends DELSUTH Strike Crisis, Orders Immediate Fix of Power, Infrastructure Challenges

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has moved decisively to restore normalcy at the Delta State University Teaching Hospital (DELSUTH), Oghara, resolving the industrial dispute that disrupted healthcare services and ordering immediate action to address the hospital's prolonged power outage and deteriorating infrastructure.

The governor's intervention followed a high-level closed-door meeting with the hospital's management on Monday, where critical issues affecting the smooth operation of the state's foremost tertiary health institution were exhaustively reviewed.

Speaking with journalists shortly after the meeting in Asaba, the Chief Medical Director of DELSUTH, Prof. Harrison Abedi, described the governor's intervention as timely, decisive, and reassuring, saying it had paved the way for the resolution of the industrial crisis while setting the hospital on the path to sustainable improvement.

According to Prof. Abedi, Governor Oborevwori personally convened the meeting and successfully resolved the issues that led to the industrial action by workers, while also taking far-reaching decisions to tackle the institution's longstanding operational challenges.

He disclosed that the governor gave urgent attention to the hospital's lingering electricity crisis, which has disrupted medical services and water supply for more than two weeks.

The Chief Medical Director revealed that the Delta State Government had already awarded a contract for the restoration of stable electricity to the hospital, with the Ministry of Energy immediately commencing implementation.

He further disclosed that a new high-tension transformer capable of providing DELSUTH with a dedicated 33KVA power supply had been procured and is currently being transported from Lagos for installation.

"The governor has assured us that the power problem will soon become a thing of the past. We are grateful that the Ministry of Energy has swung into action, and we expect the transformer to arrive very soon," Prof. Abedi said.

Beyond restoring electricity, Prof. Abedi said Governor Oborevwori directed the hospital's management to work closely with the Commissioner for Health to commence the comprehensive rehabilitation and modernization of DELSUTH.

According to him, the planned upgrade will address the hospital's ageing infrastructure, improve the quality of healthcare delivery, and reposition the institution to meet the growing healthcare needs of Deltans.

He expressed confidence that the governor's swift intervention would encourage the striking unions to suspend the industrial action and return to work without delay.

"We believe the unions will reconsider their position, and we are hopeful that the strike will be called off soon. Once that happens, normal services will resume immediately, and DELSUTH will return to full operation," he stated.

Prof. Abedi commended Governor Oborevwori for demonstrating responsive, proactive, and people-oriented leadership, noting that the governor's swift resolution of the crisis reflects his administration's unwavering commitment to strengthening the healthcare sector and ensuring that residents of Delta State continue to receive quality medical services.
