FG Begins Mass Trial of Suspected Terrorists in Abuja
The Federal Government on Monday commenced the mass trial of suspected terrorists facing terrorism-related charges at the Federal High Court, Abuja, in a major step in its ongoing efforts to strengthen the prosecution of terrorism and insurgency cases.
The proceedings, which were previously conducted in Kainji, Niger State, were moved to the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court, with multiple judges simultaneously handling different cases.
The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, is leading the prosecution team, while the Director-General of the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria, Aliyu Abubakar, heads the defence team representing the suspects.
The four-day trial is being conducted across several courtrooms, reflecting the scale of the exercise and the government's determination to expedite terrorism-related prosecutions.
Among the judges presiding over the cases are Binta Nyako, Emeka Nwite, Musa Liman, James Omotosho, Obiora Egwuatu, and Ekerete Akpan, among others.
At Justice Nwite's courtroom alone, no fewer than 58 suspected terrorists were scheduled for arraignment and trial on Monday.
The mass trial is part of the Federal Government's broader strategy to address terrorism-related offences through the judicial process, ensure accountability, and reinforce national security efforts against insurgency and violent extremism.
Further details are expected as proceedings continue.
