NMU Shines at 2026 SPE Technical Symposium, Wins Debate Championship and Hackathon Title
The Nigeria Maritime University (NMU), Okerenkoko, Delta State, has once again demonstrated its growing stature as a centre of academic excellence, innovation, and professional competence, recording outstanding successes at the 2026 Annual Technical Symposium and Exhibition (ATSE) organised by the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), Warri Section 104.

The prestigious event brought together students, industry professionals, and institutions from across the region for a series of intellectually stimulating and skill-enhancing activities, including an Industrial Visit, Sports Fiesta, Energy Hackathon Challenge, and Debate Competition.
Among the participating institutions, Nigeria Maritime University emerged as one of the standout performers, with its cadets showcasing exceptional brilliance, technical expertise, leadership qualities, and innovative thinking.
A major highlight of the symposium was the industrial visit to the Nigerian Gas Infrastructure Company (NGIC), a subsidiary of NNPC Limited. The visit provided participants with valuable firsthand exposure to the operations of one of Nigeria's key energy infrastructure companies.
For the NMU cadets, the experience offered practical insights into the petroleum and gas industry, deepening their understanding of energy production processes, infrastructure management, and industry best practices. The interactive engagement further reinforced the University's commitment to bridging the gap between classroom learning and real-world industry experience.
The University's excellence was further demonstrated during the highly competitive Energy Hackathon Challenge, where Officer Cadet Smithson, a 500-level Marine Engineering student, represented Nigeria Maritime University at the final stage of the competition as a member of Team E.
Competing against some of the brightest minds from other institutions, Team E emerged victorious after an intense contest that tested participants' creativity, problem-solving abilities, and technical innovation. The victory underscored the innovative capacity and engineering ingenuity that continue to distinguish NMU cadets on national platforms.
Nigeria Maritime University's most remarkable achievement came in the Debate Competition, where the Faculty of Engineering delivered an outstanding performance to emerge overall winner.
The debate focused on the topic: "Petroleum Industry Regulatory Control by States has Greater Potential than Centralized National Control for Growing Production Capabilities."
Representing the University were:
Ogwuche Jeremiah (500 Level, Petroleum and Gas Engineering)
Ndukwe Ebenezer (500 Level, Marine Engineering)
Daniel O. Amuja (500 Level, Mechanical Engineering)
The NMU team impressed judges and participants alike with their depth of research, critical analysis, eloquence, teamwork, and mastery of the subject matter. Their exceptional performance earned the University the coveted overall championship title and an Award of Excellence.
The double triumph in both the Debate Competition and Energy Hackathon Challenge highlights the University's growing reputation as a leading institution for engineering education, innovation, and talent development.
The achievements also reflect the quality of training, mentorship, and academic environment provided by the University, as well as the determination and intellectual strength of its cadets.
The participating delegates expressed profound appreciation to the Registrar and Secretary to Council, Dr. Paul Bebenimibo, for his unwavering support, encouragement, and commitment to student development. They noted that his timely intervention and consistent investment in student-centred initiatives played a significant role in the University's successful participation and impressive outing at the symposium.
The delegates also commended the Management of Nigeria Maritime University for its continuous support towards academic excellence, innovation, professional development, and the holistic growth of cadets.
The University's remarkable performance at the 2026 SPE Annual Technical Symposium and Exhibition further reinforces its position as one of Nigeria's emerging centres of excellence in maritime, engineering, and technological education.
As Nigeria Maritime University continues to produce highly skilled and industry-ready graduates, its achievements at national and professional competitions remain a testament to its vision of nurturing future leaders and innovators capable of driving sustainable development in Nigeria's maritime and energy sectors.
Indeed, the victories recorded at the 2026 SPE Symposium are not only a proud moment for the Faculty of Engineering but also another milestone in the University's journey towards academic distinction and national relevance.
