Right activist, Agberen condemns 28yr old boy's extra-judicial murder by Police, calls for investigation into ASP Usman's conduct
A Warri based human rights Activist, Comrade(Amb) Derrick Oritsematosan Agberen has condemned in strong terms the extra-judicial murder of a twenty year old boy, Oghenemine Ogidi by a Police team attached to the Effurun Area Command in Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State.
This is contained in a statement made available to Our Correspondent in Warri, Agberen.
Agberen also called for a thorough investigation into the conduct of ASP Nuhu Usman, a leader of the Police team who has been arrested and transferred with others to the State Police Command for gunning down the young boy in public glare.
He said, "A thorough investigation into the officer's conduct is necessary to ensure accountability and adherence to the law, as no police operative has the authority to take the law into their own hands without a competent court of jurisdiction."
According to him, "The ongoing cases of extrajudicial kiłłings in Delta State must cease, as the frequent episodes of these events are concerning."
Agberen recalled that the dastard incident occurred on Sunday April 26 at Sapele Motor park in Effurun.
He said, "According to reports, the individual, found with a parcel containing a Beretta pistol and four live ammunition rounds, was apprehended by members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers at Effurun park and subsequently called and handed over the suspect to the police.
However, the officer involved reportedly shot the suspect in the hand in a public area, as evidenced by video footage, and later, ASP Nuhu Usman, the team leader, shot the individual at the station without due process or the knowledge of the Area Commander.
"While the officer has been queried, detained, and transferred to the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters in Abuja to face the Force Disciplinary Committee, it is imperative that the Delta State Command ensures such conduct is not tolerated or repeated, ensuring respect for the rule of laws and human rights, as this incident should also serve as a deterrent to other officers in like mind."
Agberen also stated that, "The unilateral decision by the Police Officer raises serious concerns, particularly since further investigation could have led to the arrest of other linked suspects, stressing that, "unless the police officer has prior knowledge of other suspects and the firearm or can be assumed that he is power driven."
