The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Warri Correspondents' Chapel is set for a crucial election, with Okakuro Akpokona Omafuaire vying for the chairmanship position.

In his manifesto released on Friday, 13th March, 2026, which a copy was sent to PEBNEWS, Omafuaire vowed to prioritize Journalists' welfare, transparency, and accountability within the union.

The NUJ has been plagued by issues such as unpaid salaries, poor remuneration, lack of health and life insurance, harassment, and job insecurity. Omafuaire aims to address these challenges through his proposed initiatives, including a journalists' Emergency Welfare Fund, rapid legal response team, and safety training programs.

"I am contesting for chairmanship because NUJ must return to its primary purpose - protecting the welfare and rights of journalists.

"If elected, welfare will come first, transparency will be standard, and silence in the face of injustice will end," Omafuaire partly stated.

Further, his Manifesto emphasizes unity among journalists, capacity-building workshops, support for freelance and independent journalists, and activating a rapid legal response team for detained or harassed members.

Omafuaire's candidacy is seen as a chance to revitalise the union and prioritize its core mission.
