“We’ll never let politicians deceive us again,” Wike tells FCT residents
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has urged residents of the nation’s capital to resist being misled by politicians seeking their votes during elections.
Wike made the call on Wednesday during a thank-you visit to stakeholders in the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), where he expressed appreciation to residents for supporting backers of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the February 21 Area Council elections.
The former Rivers State governor commended the residents for keeping faith with the agreement reached during the election period, assuring them that he would also fulfil the promises made to them.
According to him, the outcome of the election showed that residents understood the importance of honouring commitments between political leaders and the people.
Speaking during the visit, Wike stressed the need for voters to remain vigilant and hold politicians accountable for their promises.
“We will never again allow politicians to deceive us. We won’t sit back and listen to promises only to never see them again after elections. Will you allow that to happen? An agreement must be honoured,” he said.
He added that when leaders make commitments to the people, they must be prepared to deliver once the people have fulfilled their own part of the bargain.
“If you ask me to do something and you fulfil your part, I will not offer excuses. I must keep my end of the bargain,” Wike stated.
The minister further disclosed that President Tinubu expects the FCT minister to maintain close contact with residents and remain attentive to their needs.
“One of the president’s directives is clear: he does not want an FCT minister who cannot connect with the people. He wants someone who listens, understands their needs, and does not stay in the office without knowing what the people truly want,” he said.
Wike also recalled his earlier visit to the community during the election period, when he promised to return and appreciate the residents if they supported the administration.
“I visited Apo and assured you that if you supported us, I would return to say thank you. Today, we are here to express our gratitude,” the minister added.
