Kano Assembly begins impeachment process against Deputy Governor Abdulsalam

The Kano State House of Assembly on Thursday commenced impeachment proceedings against the Deputy Governor, Aminu Abdulsalam, over allegations of misconduct, abuse of office and breach of public trust.

The development was disclosed in a report indicating that lawmakers had formally initiated the process in line with constitutional provisions.

The impeachment notice was presented during plenary by the Majority Leader of the House, Lawan Dala, and subsequently read on the floor by the Speaker, Ismail Falgore.

Lawmakers stated that the move was based on Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution, which empowers a state legislature to begin impeachment proceedings against a deputy governor accused of gross misconduct.

According to the Assembly, a total of 38 lawmakers appended their signatures to the impeachment notice, signalling strong legislative backing for the action.

Speaker Falgore directed that the deputy governor be formally served with the notice, in compliance with the procedures outlined in the constitution.

The impeachment move comes amid rising political tensions in Kano State following Governor Abba Yusuf’s defection from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) last year.

Deputy Governor Abdulsalam declined to join the governor in the defection and instead chose to remain with the NNPP, a decision that reportedly widened divisions within the state government.

Political observers say the disagreement deepened internal rifts in the administration and has fuelled speculation about Abdulsalam’s political future, setting the stage for the ongoing impeachment proceedings.
