Delta State Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), Comrade Reuben Izeze, has underscored continuous capacity building as the backbone of excellence in infrastructure delivery, stressing that only well-trained professionals can guarantee durable, safe and value-driven projects across the state.

Izeze made the remarks on Tuesday during an interactive session with Zonal and Superintendent Engineers of the ministry in Asaba, noting that the ever-evolving nature of engineering demands constant learning to keep pace with modern practices.

According to him, sustained professional development exposes engineers to new technologies, global standards and innovative approaches required for effective road construction and urban infrastructure development in today’s environment.

The commissioner reaffirmed the commitment of the Governor Sheriff Oborevwori-led administration to professionalism, efficiency and value for money, adding that these goals can only be achieved through a skilled, motivated and competent workforce aligned with the administration’s MORE Agenda.

He explained that deliberate investment in human capacity would translate into faster project completion, stronger and longer-lasting infrastructure, improved safety standards and better cost management in public works.

Izeze urged engineers and key players in the construction sector to embrace regular retraining and strict compliance with project specifications, assuring that the ministry would continue to back initiatives aimed at boosting technical competence and service delivery.

He further cautioned engineers against over-reliance on GPS data, stressing the need for physical, on-site inspections of project locations, while also calling for the timely completion of ongoing projects, especially as the election year draws closer.

Speaking on staff welfare, the commissioner noted that better working conditions would enhance productivity and performance. “If you are excellent at what you do and remain on top of your game, I know how best to showcase and support my people,” he said.

Izeze added that training remains as important as the job itself due to the constant emergence of new techniques and innovations in the sector, insisting that consistent training and retraining are essential for staff relevance and effectiveness.

The meeting was attended by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Engr. Mrs. Juliet Aboloje; the Special Assistant (Technical) to the Commissioner, Engr. Ejovi Adasen; Director of Highways, Engr. Solomon Aghagba; Director of Urban Roads, Engr. Victor Oputa; and other senior officials.
