Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Abba Kyari, the former head of the Inspector-General of Police’s Intelligence Response Team (IRT), has earned a Master of Science (MSc) degree in Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution while in detention at the Kuje Correctional Centre, Abuja.

Kyari was awarded the degree on Monday, according to a copy of the certificate shared by a family member, Abdul Hadi Ibrahim. The document confirms that the programme was completed at the Nigerian Open University (NOUN) Kuje Correctional Centre Campus.

The development has drawn attention to the educational framework within Nigeria’s custodial system, as NOUN operates a special study arrangement that allows inmates to pursue tertiary education as part of rehabilitation and reintegration efforts.

Kyari, a senior police officer who once led a specialised intelligence unit tasked with dismantling kidnapping and terrorist networks, had earlier obtained a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Geography before joining the Nigeria Police Force and rising through the ranks.

Despite his ongoing detention, Kyari successfully completed the postgraduate programme and has indicated plans to immediately pursue a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree, according to the statement issued on his behalf.

In the statement, Ibrahim described the academic achievement as “a powerful demonstration of resilience, discipline, and determination in the face of adversity.”

He expressed gratitude to God for guidance and commended the Vice-Chancellor and management of the Nigerian Open University for sustaining access to education within correctional facilities. The statement also acknowledged the management and staff of the Nigerian Correctional Service at the Kuje Custodial Centre for providing what it described as an enabling environment for learning and rehabilitation.

“This milestone reinforces the truth that leadership, excellence, and the pursuit of knowledge transcend circumstances,” the statement concluded, underscoring Kyari’s continued pursuit of academic advancement while in custody.
