Provide enabling environment for MOUN, Archbishop Onyeke appeals to Gov Oborevwori
The National Enforcement Officer, , Motorcycle Operators Union of Nigeria (MOUN) Archbishop Onyeke Onyeke, has called on the Delta State Government to provide the enabling ground for members of the Union in the state to operate without hindrance, saying that the union is constitutionally empowered to operate as being done in other states of the country.
Archbishop Onyeke made the call in an interview with newsmen in the oil rich city of Warri, Delta State, stressing that it was in the best interest of the Delta State Government to step into the matter and give room for smooth operation of MOUN before the matter degenerate into a full blown crisis.
He said that MOUN is recognised by the enabling laws that governs Union operations in the country, adding that as a registered labour union recognised by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the office of the Minister of Labour, it was apparently clear that any other organization acting on behalf of Motorcycle Operators, was an illegal organ.
He wondered why it was becoming an issue to allow smooth operations of MOUN in Delta State when other states in thcountry have given the union permission operate on behalf of its members according to enabling laws of the land. He said there was no need for the government to appear to be allegedly supporting an illegal organization against legally recognized union.
"I have watched with keen interest the unfolding events between our union (MOUN) in Delta State and I must say it is laughable to see that there is great resistance from an illegal group in our dear state. As a National Officer of MOUN, I am from Delta State here and I think it is high time we put the issues in proper perspective".
"MOUN is recognized by law as a Labour union. Relevant Labour laws have given members of our union across the country the power to operate. The Federal Ministry of Labour and the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) recognise the Union. We are operating in other states and we don't have any problem with other union in such states .
"Why are we always having issues in Delta State with some matters that need not to be dragged. If you like to be part of us, you are free and I see no reason why a group not known to the law of the Federal Republic of Nigeria will be seen to be enjoying the protection of govenment against a legally recognized union. I am not sure the governor has been properly briefed.
"It is on this note that I wish to call on the Delta State Government under the able leadership of Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori to step into this matter and give approval for MOUN operations in the state. Our Governor is a listening governor and wouldn't want any breakdown of law and order in any part of the state. There is tension already in the country and I pray Governor Oborevwori steps in before the problem escalate."
Archbishop Onyeke used the opportunity to appeal to members of MOUN Delta State Chapter to follow due process in championing their course, assuring that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori that he knows will not take side with an illegal organ no matter the calibre of persons promoting the illegality.
