A celebration meant to mark the end of final examinations at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State, turned fatal when a final year student died in a motorcade crash.

The accident happened at Ujoelen on Monday, close to the primary school, when a vehicle in the convoy of fresh graduates attempted to overtake another car. Eyewitnesses said the driver lost control and collided with a stationary truck, instantly claiming one life and leaving five others injured.

The Edo State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Cyril Mathew, confirmed the incident. He said, “The students were driving in a convoy after their final examination. One of them attempted to overtake another vehicle and rammed into a stationary truck. One person died and five others sustained injuries.”

Investigations revealed that the group of students had been driving recklessly and failed to observe basic safety rules during the celebration.

Mathew emphasized the need for caution even during moments of excitement. He said the incident serves as “a tragic reminder of the importance of prioritizing safety and responsible behavior on the roads.”
