Delta Police Arrest Officer Caught Shooting at Moving Vehicle in Viral Video
The Delta State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a police officer seen in a viral video recklessly shooting at a moving vehicle in Asaba, the state capital.
In a statement released on Sunday, the Command’s spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, described the officer’s conduct as “unprofessional and unbecoming of a police officer,” adding that it contravened Force Order 237, which strictly governs the use of firearms by members of the Nigeria Police Force.
According to the statement, Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, ordered the immediate identification and arrest of the officer after personally reviewing the disturbing footage.
The errant officer has since been detained at the Command Headquarters in Asaba, and an internal disciplinary process has commenced to determine appropriate sanctions.
“The Command condemns his act in totality as no policeman has the right to use his firearm without recourse to Force Order 237,” Edafe stated. “It is the duty of every Nigerian Police officer to protect lives and property, not to endanger them.”
Preliminary investigations, according to the Police, indicate that the officer was responding to a reported hit-and-run incident when the shooting occurred. However, the Command maintained that such actions were unacceptable and unjustified under any circumstance.
The Commissioner of Police assured members of the public that the matter would be handled transparently and that the officer would face the full weight of the law if found culpable.
"Protection of life and property in the state remains our top priority,” the statement concluded.
The arrest comes amid heightened public scrutiny of police conduct in Delta State, following recent efforts by the Command to enforce discipline and rebuild public trust in law enforcement operations.
