The Nigerian media industry has been thrown into mourning following the tragic death of Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, a 29 year old news anchor, reporter, and producer with Arise News Channel, who was killed in the early hours of Monday, September 29, 2025, during an armed robbery attack at her residence in Katampe, Abuja.

According to Arise News, Somtochukwu fondly known as Sommie was more than a broadcaster. She was also a lawyer, a professional colleague admired for her dedication, and a supportive friend to many. The station described her as “a cherished member of the Arise News family, a vibrant voice that engaged and connected with our viewers.”

The incident is now under investigation by the Nigeria Police Force. However, her death has left pressing questions about security in Abuja’s residential areas. How were armed robbers able to invade her home undetected? And how quickly will authorities act to apprehend those responsible?

In its statement, Arise News expressed shock and grief, saying: “We remain in shock and call for a speedy investigation, apprehension and prosecution of the culprits. We extend our deepest condolences to Sommie’s parents, siblings, extended family, friends, and loved ones at this difficult time. Sommie’s voice is now silent but her spirit, passion and legacy will endure as part of our collective memory.”

Her loss has not only silenced a promising journalist but has also reignited conversations about the safety of citizens in the nation’s capital.
