The Labour Party (LP), under the leadership of Senator Nenadi Usman, has embarked on a critical repositioning ahead of the 2027 general elections.
At its statutory National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held Friday in Abuja, the party inaugurated an interim National Working Committee (NWC) to steer its affairs pending the conduct of a national convention.
The high-level meeting, which commenced earlier in the day, brought together prominent party stakeholders, including Abia State Governor Dr. Alex Otti, his deputy Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, and several other key figures within the party.
Also in attendance was the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero, while Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT), Chief Sylvester Ehiiofor, sent a representative.
The main agenda focused on the inauguration of the interim NWC, a crucial move to stabilize party leadership during this transitional period.
In addition, the NEC set up several strategic committees, including a membership revalidation committee tasked with conducting a nationwide membership audit, and a congresses committee to organize upcoming party congresses at all levels.
Party insiders say the meeting marks a pivotal step in repositioning the Labour Party, with one NEC member telling this newspaper, “This is not just housekeeping, it's a reset. We are laying the foundation for a stronger, more organized LP heading into 2027.”
The developments aim to close internal gaps, consolidate gains from previous elections, and rebuild grassroots support ahead of the next political cycle.
