The Lagos State Police Command has arrested four suspects in connection with a massive N500 million visa scam that defrauded over 100 individuals with false promises of Canadian and Australian work visas.
The Command’s spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday in Lagos. He said the suspects, aged between 23 and 36, were arrested by operatives of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) following a transfer of the case from the Ago Okota Police Division.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects are staff of an educational consultancy based in the Ago Okota area of Lagos,” Hundeyin stated.
According to the police, the syndicate allegedly collected money from unsuspecting victims under the pretense of helping them secure lucrative overseas jobs. The victims were reportedly promised work visas to Canada and Australia but never received any documentation or refunds.
Investigations have also uncovered that the scam involves additional accomplices who are currently at large. Hundeyin confirmed that efforts are ongoing to track down and arrest these individuals.
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, has urged the public to exercise caution when dealing with travel and recruitment agencies.
We advise residents to always verify the legitimacy of any visa or travel-related service provider before committing financially,” CP Jimoh cautioned.
He also reassured the public that the Command is committed to safeguarding residents from fraud and ensuring that justice is served.
As the investigation continues, the Lagos Police Command is encouraging potential victims or anyone with relevant information to come forward.
