Oborevwori Launches Statewide Welfare Scheme for Vulnerable Women

In a bold stride toward social inclusion and economic relief, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has approved the registration of 10,000 widows across the state’s 25 local government areas and 270 federal wards for monthly stipends and free medical care.

The initiative, which was unveiled during the governor’s State of the State Address to the Delta State House of Assembly, will see each registered widow receive a ₦15,000 monthly payment for the duration of his administration.

Speaking during a coordination meeting with state, senatorial, and local government coordinators in Asaba, the Executive Assistant to the Governor on Social Investment Programmes, Chief (Dr.) Isioma Okonta, emphasized that the selection process is non-political and inclusive, cutting across all religions and communities.

“To ensure fairness and transparency, traditional rulers, community leaders, religious groups, and president-generals will play key roles in the identification and registration process,” Chief Okonta said.

Describing the initiative as both compassionate and visionary, Okonta noted that the scheme aims to alleviate financial hardship and enhance the well-being of widows, many of whom struggle with economic and emotional challenges.

“This is a landmark move by a responsive government that truly cares for the most vulnerable members of society,” he added.

The announcement has triggered widespread jubilation across the state, with stakeholders praising Governor Oborevwori for prioritizing social welfare amid national economic uncertainty. Citizens from all 25 LGAs described the initiative as a timely and humane intervention.

By focusing on widows—a group often overlooked in mainstream policy—the Oborevwori administration is reinforcing its MORE Agenda (Meaningful development, Opportunities for all, Realistic reforms, and Enhanced peace and security), placing equity and compassion at the heart of governance.

The widow support scheme is expected to improve living standards, restore dignity, and strengthen public trust in government-led welfare efforts.

As the program rolls out, thousands of Delta widows can now look forward to a more secure and supportive future, thanks to government that continues to put people first.
