Tinubu commends NMU's progress, charges graduates to contribute to national development

President Bola Tinubu has commended the Nigeria Maritime University (NMU) for its progress, noting that the institution has become a beacon of hope, knowledge, and progress in the Niger Delta region.

Speaking on behalf of Mr. President, Prof. Edoba Omoregie, SAN, University of Benin VC, at the university's 2nd convocation ceremony in Okerenkoko, in Warri Southwest Local Government Area of Delta State, Tinubu highlighted the institution's commitment to expanding its ideals and contributing to peace and stability in the region.

The President praised the university's strategic vision in becoming a leading institution in maritime education, research, and innovation, aligning with the nation's agenda to reposition Nigeria as a major player in the global blue economy.

Tinubu charged the graduates to uphold the values of excellence, integrity, and service, and to contribute meaningfully to national development in the maritime sector and other spheres of human endeavor.

Recalled that Delta State governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori and Bayelsa counterpart, Senator Douye Diri, were awarded honorary Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) degrees in Social and Economic Development by the Nigerian Maritime University (NMU).

Also honored at the ceremony were Senator James Manager, who received a Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) in National Development, and Engr Egionwo, who was awarded a Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) in Industrial Development.

Represented at the ceremony by the State Commissioner for Higher Education, Professor Nyerowho Tonukari, Governor Oborevwori expressed profound appreciation to the university for the recognition, describing it as a tribute to the resilience of the Delta people and the collective efforts of his administration. 

"I received this recognition not merely as a personal honour but as a tribute to the resilient spirit of our people, the tireless efforts of our administration, and the shared vision we hold for a more inclusive Delta State and a prosperous Nigeria," the governor partly stated.

In a separate address, the Chancellor of NMU, King Alfred Papapreve Diette-Spiff, welcomed dignitaries to the convocation ceremony, urging graduates to be adaptable, open-minded, and collaborative in their future endeavors.

"As a good advice, you should never underestimate the power of collaboration. Many great advancements arise from teamwork and diverse perspectives. As you go into the world, always try and engage with others, including those who may think differently from you do. Remember, together, you can create solutions that are greater than the sum of their parts. And finally, now as an alumnus, do not forget your Alma Mata." Diette-Spiff noted.
