In a landmark operation devoid of violence, the Federal Government has successfully shut down an illegal mining site in Damau, Kubau Local Government Area of Kaduna State, demonstrating a new strategy that emphasizes community collaboration and diplomacy over confrontation.

The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, disclosed this in a statement signed by his Special Assistant on Media, Segun Tomori. He noted that the action was carried out by the Mining Marshals, who relied on intelligence gathering and strategic community engagement to dismantle the operation peacefully. The site, rich in tin deposits, is legally owned by Trobell Minerals Limited but had been overrun by illegal miners for several months.

Local residents had expressed growing concern over the environmental damage, economic losses, and increased insecurity resulting from the unregulated mining activities. However, in a sharp departure from previous heavy-handed approaches, the Marshals secured cooperation from traditional rulers and community stakeholders, leading to the voluntary withdrawal of the illegal miners under official supervision.

Dr. Alake, while speaking at the first anniversary of the establishment of the Mining Marshals, lauded the team’s professionalism and pledged increased logistical support to further empower them. “The reward for hard work is more work,” he stated, assuring that more resources would be deployed to enhance their operations nationwide.

He emphasized the broader significance of the Kaduna intervention, describing it as a potential model for similar operations across the country. “Illegal mining and insecurity remain major threats to the mining sector. But the peaceful outcome in Damau shows that a combination of enforcement and engagement can yield sustainable results,” Alake said.

The Minister further appealed for continued community cooperation, warning of the far-reaching consequences of illegal mining on lives, livelihoods, and investment. He affirmed that the Federal Government remains resolute in sanitizing the mining sector, restoring investor confidence, and unlocking the nation’s vast mineral potential.
