Nigeria’s Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has once again drawn international acclaim after being named the Best Road Safety Management Agency in Africa at the 3rd Kofi Annan Road Safety Award Ceremony, held from April 14–15, 2025, in Ezulwini, Kingdom of Eswatini.

The prestigious award, which recognizes agencies that have made outstanding contributions to reducing road traffic crashes and fatalities, was received on behalf of Nigeria by Assistant Corps Marshal Meshach Adigizi Jatau, fwc, who represented the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, mni.

The award celebrates FRSC’s ongoing commitment to road safety through innovation, policy enforcement, public education, and data-driven decision-making—all of which align with the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety (2021–2030), which targets a 50% reduction in road-related deaths globally by 2030.

Established in 1988, the FRSC is Nigeria’s lead agency responsible for traffic management, enforcement of road safety laws, driver licensing, accident response, and public education on safe road use. Over the years, the Corps has become a model institution across Africa, known for pioneering initiatives in crash prevention and traffic regulation.

Speaking at the event, international stakeholders—including representatives from the United Nations, African Union, NGOs, and academic institutions—praised Nigeria’s advancements in digital enforcement, driver training, and emergency response coordination.

According to observers, Nigeria's win reflects a broader commitment to transforming transportation safety standards on the continent. The Corps has recently strengthened its focus on technology, deploying automated number plate recognition systems, speed limiters, body cameras for officers, and enhanced crash investigation tools.

In his acceptance remarks, Assistant Corps Marshal Jatau credited the achievement to the collective efforts of FRSC personnel nationwide and reaffirmed the agency’s resolve to uphold high safety standards. “This award is a testament to the vision of the Federal Government and the tireless work of our officers in safeguarding lives on Nigerian roads,” he stated.

The Kofi Annan Road Safety Award, named after the late former UN Secretary-General, is an initiative designed to encourage innovation, collaboration, and leadership in Africa’s road safety landscape. It serves as a platform to spotlight best practices and motivate governments and agencies to scale up life-saving strategies.

As road-related fatalities remain a major public health issue across Africa, the award underscores the urgent need for coordinated efforts among nations. Nigeria’s recognition serves as an inspiration to other countries seeking to strengthen road safety systems and meet global targets.
