The Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has emphasized the strategic importance of the Benin-Asaba Expressway, describing it as a crucial infrastructure link between Nigeria’s Eastern and Western regions. Speaking at the flag-off ceremony for the highway’s reconstruction on Sunday—represented by his Deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme, FCA—Oborevwori stressed the need for consistent maintenance to maximize its economic and social benefits.
The 125-kilometer Benin-Asaba Expressway serves as a vital artery for trade, travel, and economic development, and according to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, its rehabilitation is not just necessary but essential for regional prosperity.
Speaking at the flag-off event, where he was represented by his Deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme, the governor underscored the project’s impact on safety, commerce, and economic expansion.
“This expressway is a critical infrastructure that connects the Eastern and Western regions of our country. It must be maintained to ensure seamless movement of goods and people,” Oborevwori stated.
He highlighted that beyond easing transportation challenges, the highway’s rehabilitation would unlock significant economic potential, leading to job creation, enhanced trade, and an overall improvement in the standard of living.
“As we commence this project, I urge all stakeholders to collaborate and ensure its timely completion. A modern and efficient transport system will drive economic growth and open new opportunities for our people,” he added.
Oborevwori also extended gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for initiating the project and commended the Federal Ministry of Works for its commitment to advancing infrastructure development through Public-Private Partnerships (PPP).
Echoing the governor’s sentiments, Edo State Governor, Sen. Monday Okpebholo, described the expressway reconstruction as a “legacy project” that will leave a lasting impact on the region.
Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, reaffirmed the Federal Government’s dedication to road infrastructure, stating that the 125km expressway will be built through a PPP arrangement.
“President Bola Tinubu is committed to ensuring that all major roads in Nigeria are in good shape. This project will not only ease transportation but also strengthen economic ties between the South-South and South-East regions,” Umahi said.
The project will extend from Benin to the Second Niger Bridge, further enhancing connectivity and fostering regional development. With its completion, the expressway is expected to transform transportation efficiency and economic activities in the corridor, reinforcing its status as a lifeline for trade and mobility in Nigeria.
