Defender of the Niger Delta: Tompolo Honored for Safeguarding Nigeria’s Oil Wealth

High Chief Government Oweizide Ekpemupolo, alias Tompolo, was honoured and recognized for his patriotism and  pivotal role in safeguarding Nigeria’s oil and gas sector. He was awarded the "Private Security Personality of the Year 2024" at the New Telegraph Awards/Dinner Night 2024. Tompolo’s relentless efforts in protecting the nation’s vital energy infrastructure have not only curbed oil theft and vandalism but also significantly boosted productions and strengthening the backbone of Nigeria’s economy.  

 
Dr. Paul Bebenimibo, Tompolo’s media consultant and representative at the event, delivered a stirring speech in an interview highlighting the profound impact of Tompolo’s work. He started by first thanking God for giving Tompolo the strength and vision to serve the nation selflessly. "First and foremost, i want to thank God Almighty who has given Tompolo the strength and vision to serve the nation selflessly,”. “We also express our heartfelt gratitude to New Telegraph for recognizing his unwavering dedication with this well-deserved honor" He said. 

 

Bebenimibo emphasized that Tompolo was deeply humbled by the award, though his absence at the event reflected his commitment, because he was out in the field overseeing security operations. 

He also highlighted the tremendous growth the oil and gas sector has attained since 2022 as a result of Tompolo's effort. “Since 2022, when Tompolo was entrusted with the mandate to secure Nigeria’s oil, gas, and critical infrastructure considered as the lifeline of the nation, he has been on the frontlines. At the time, Nigeria's daily oil production hovered  around 800,000 to 900,000 barrels per day due to rampant oil theft and pipeline vandalism. Under his watch, production has surged 2 million barrels per day, a remarkable turnaround that speaks volumes about his dedication and effectiveness He said".

This milestone isn’t just about numbers, it represents renewed hope for Nigeria’s economy. Increased oil production translates into greater revenues, enabling investments in national infrastructure, education, and healthcare. But for Tompolo, the mission is far from over. “His ultimate goal is to push Nigeria’s production beyond the 2 million barrels per day ” Dr. Bebenimibo added. “He’s driven not by personal gain but by a deep sense of duty to the nation.”  

Central to Tompolo’s success is his deep-rooted connection to grassroots communities in the Niger Delta. Recognizing that sustainable security requires local support, he has built a network of trust, engaging community leaders and youth in safeguarding oil installations. This approach has not only strengthened security but also fostered peace and cooperation in historically volatile regions.  

Festus Keyamo, Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development and a fellow award recipient, echoed these sentiments during an interview at the event. “Tompolo has worked tirelessly to protect Nigeria’s oil wealth and has been instrumental in fighting crimes that threaten our economic stability,” Keyamo noted. “His success in curbing oil theft and boosting production is commendable. More importantly, he’s a friend and brother, and together, we’re committed to ensuring peace and development in the Niger Delta.”  

Keyamo also praised Tompolo’s grassroots strategies and his ability to unite diverse communities towards a common goal noting that He didn’t just fight crime, he built trust, and that’s why he’s been successful.
