Nigeria Mourns as Elder statesman Chief Edwin Clark passes at 97

Nigeria has lost one of its most influential elder statesmen, Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, who passed away peacefully in Abuja on Monday, February 17, 2025, at the age of 97. His death comes just days after the passing of Chief Ayo Adebanjo, leader of the Yoruba socio-cultural organization, Afenifere, marking the end of an era for two towering figures in Nigeria’s political and socio-cultural landscape.
Chief Edwin Clark, a former senator, lawyer, and renowned activist, hailed from Kiagbodo in Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State. Throughout his 75-year career he was an unwavering voice for justice, human rights, and the development of the Niger Delta region. His death was announced by the Clark-Fuludu Bekederemo family in a statement signed by Prof. C.C. Clark, expressing gratitude for the public’s prayers and support.
The Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) also confirmed his passing in a joint statement released on Tuesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Obiuwevbi Ominimini, alongside Professor College Clark of the Clark-Fuludu-Bekederemo family and Ambassador Dr. Godknows Igali the National Chairman of PANDEF. The statement described Clark’s death as the fall of a “mighty Iroko tree,” signifying the immense impact he had on Nigeria’s political and socio-economic development.
Chief Clark was widely regarded as a pillar of the South-South region and the Ijaw ethnic nationality, dedicating his life to advocating for resource control, good governance, and the rights of marginalized communities. He was a fearless political figure who played a pivotal role in shaping policies that promoted equity and inclusion in Nigeria’s governance.
As a lawyer and politician, his influence stretched beyond regional politics. Over the decades, he served in various capacities, including as a minister, senator, and key adviser to multiple Nigerian leaders. His outspoken stance on national issues often made him a respected yet formidable figure in both government and civil society.
His legacy as a defender of the Niger Delta and a staunch advocate for national unity remains indelible. Tributes have continued to pour in from across the country, with leaders from various sectors honoring his lifelong contributions to Nigeria’s democracy, legal system, and socio-economic progress.
Details regarding his funeral arrangements will be announced by the family in due course. Meanwhile, Nigerians continue to reflect on the life of Chief Edwin Clark a man whose impact on the country’s history will be felt for generations to come.
