Neglected and Forgotten: Egbemene, Sandfill 2, and other Warri Southwest Communities cry out for Government Intervention

Residents of Egbemene, Sandfill 2, and other communities in Warri Southwest Local Government Area of Delta State are pleading for urgent government intervention as they endure harsh living conditions due to a lack of basic amenities, economic opportunities, and infrastructure. Despite their contributions to the nation’s economy and political system, these communities remain severely underdeveloped, struggling with flooding, pollution, unemployment, and poor sanitation.

A recent investigative visit by PEBNEWS to the neglected communities of Sandfill 2 and Egbemene exposed the dire living conditions faced by residents. The reality on the ground is a community struggling for survival, where the most basic necessities such as clean water, electricity, and healthcare services are nonexistent.

In Egbemene community, the situation is particularly alarming. The entire community is built on piles of sawdust, as a result of nearby industrial wood activities. During the dry season, dust clouds engulf the area, causing severe eye irritation and respiratory issues. In the rainy season, the absence of proper drainage results in massive flooding, making movement nearly impossible and exposing residents to waterborne diseases.

"This place is uninhabitable. During the dry season, the sawdust in the air makes breathing difficult. When it rains, everywhere is flooded. We feel abandoned," residents cry out.

Despite their struggles, these communities remain an integral part of Nigeria’s economy and political system. Residents actively participate in elections, yet their votes have not translated into meaningful development.

The local economy is largely driven by small-scale businesses, including fishing, farming, and traditional bread-making, particularly the locally known "Kpo Kpo Madiga" (a staple bread). However, these small businesses face extinction due to environmental challenges and a lack of government support.

One major concern is the lack of clean water. Residents are forced to rely on polluted rivers for drinking, bathing, and other household needs, exposing them to bacterial and fungal infections.

"We have no clean water. The river we use is contaminated with waste, yet we have no alternative," another resident complained.

The former chairman of Egbemene Community, Richard Opudu, expressed frustration over the government’s continued neglect despite multiple appeals for assistance.

"We have written to the NDDC and the state government, pleading for help, but we have received no response. Our people are suffering, and no one is listening," Opudu stated.

The residents' demands are simple yet urgent:
- Provision of essential amenities such as clean water, electricity, and proper sanitation facilities.
- Infrastructure development, including roads and bridges to improve accessibility.
- Establishment of industries to create employment opportunities and boost economic activities.
- Support for small-scale businesses and entrepreneurs to help sustain the local economy.

While the Delta State Government has made efforts to address the challenges of rural communities, residents of Egbemene, Sandfill 2, and neighboring areas feel left behind. The widening gap in rural development continues to highlight the need for targeted policies and intervention programs that will prioritize the welfare of these marginalized communities.

As the cries for help grow louder, the people of these communities remain hopeful that their voices will be heard, and action will finally be taken to improve their living conditions and secure a better future.
